00:00:33: In this first lesson of our tenth season, we will continue our journey through pediatric dentistry. Today we will focus on cleanings, sealants and the use of fluoride. So, let’s start! Pediatric dentistry is a discipline built on prevention. Primary teeth — also called baby teeth — may be temporary, but they play a critical role in speech development, nutrition, and holding space for the permanent dentition. Dental caries in children is a common chronic disease and is almost entirely preventable. Kinderzahnheilkunde ist eine Disziplin, die auf Prävention aufbaut. Milchzähne mögen zwar nur vorübergehend vorhanden sein, spielen aber eine entscheidende Rolle für die Sprachentwicklung, die Ernährung und als Platzhalter für die bleibenden Zähne. Karies ist bei Kindern eine häufige chronische Erkrankung, die nahezu vollständig vermeidbar ist.

00:01:54: Number 1 – Professional Cleanings: The goal is not only to remove plaque and tartar, but also to make the appointment a positive experience for the child. Children-friendly phrases: "Today we're going to give your teeth a super special clean and make them sparkle like stars!" "I'm going to count all your teeth first and check that they're all doing their job properly." "This is my tooth tickler — it's going to give your teeth a little massage!" "I'm going to use this special little brush with some bubblegum-flavored toothpaste. Does that sound okay?" "The brush spins around really fast and tickles your teeth clean — it might feel a little funny, but it won't hurt!" "Now I'm going to use my special water squirter to wash all the bits away — just like a little shower for your teeth!" "This is Mr. Thirsty — he's going to drink up all the water, so you don't have to swallow it." "I'm going to polish your teeth now to make them really shiny — just like polishing shoes, but for teeth!" "You did such an amazing job! Your teeth are looking so clean and healthy — I think they're the shiniest teeth I've seen all day!" "Can you feel how smooth your teeth are with your tongue? That means they're perfectly clean!" Tip: Avoid words like 'needle', 'drill', or 'pain' — replace them with 'sleepy juice', 'tooth counter', and 'funny feeling'.

00:04:13: Number 2 – Fissure Sealants: A sealant is a thin, plastic-based coating that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, primarily the first and second permanent molars, to seal off the deep pits and fissures where bacteria and food debris tend to collect. Children-friendly phrases: "Did you know that your back teeth have tiny little grooves and valleys on top, just like a mountain range? Sometimes bits of food and sugar bugs love to hide in there — and they're really tricky to clean out!" "We're going to put a special protective shield on your back teeth today to keep all the sugar bugs out!" "It won't hurt at all — I just need you to keep your mouth open for a couple of minutes." "First, I'm going to paint a special cleaning liquid on your teeth to make sure they're perfectly ready — it might taste a little bit sour, but only for a few seconds!" "Now I need you to be my best helper and keep your teeth nice and dry — can you do that for me?" "Next, I'm going to paint on the special shield liquid. It's a bit like nail polish, but for teeth!" "And now comes the coolest part — I have a magic blue light that makes the shield go rock solid in just a few seconds. Ready to see it?" "That's it — all done! Your teeth now have their very own superpower shield. How cool is that?"

00:06:55: Number 3 – Use of Fluoride: Fluoride is one of the most well-researched and effective agents in preventive dentistry. Children-friendly phrases: "I'm going to paint a special varnish on your teeth today. It might taste a little bit like toffee!" "It will make your teeth really strong and help protect them from sugar." "Just try not to eat or drink anything hot for a couple of hours afterwards, okay?" When giving Information to parents you can say: "We recommend using a fluoride toothpaste twice a day — once in the morning and once before bed." "At night is the most important time, because saliva production decreases during sleep, so the teeth need that extra protection."

00:08:12: Here is your overview of the vocabulary of this week’s lesson: to decrease – abnehmen, etwas reduzieren, weniger werden; to paint – anmalen, anstreichen; shiny – glänzend; couple of – einige, ein paar; twice a day – zweimal täglich; baby teeth – Milchzähne; varnish – Lack; chewing surface – Kaufläche; mountain range – Bergkette; sugar bugs – Kariesbakterien/ Bakterien, die Zucker mögen; shield – Schutzschild; sleepy juice – Schlafsaft, Betäubung.
