#103 Versorgung mit Kronen – Protecting and Restoring Teeth with Crowns

00:00:33: In today´s lesson, we will talk about dental crowns, what they are, when your patient needs them, the procedure step-by-step, and how to explain everything in clear, patient-friendly English. So, let’s start! Crowns are a core topic in restorative dentistry and often the first “big” restoration your patients experience. A crown is often the best solution when a tooth is severely weakened or damaged. Kronen sind ein zentrales Thema in der restaurativen Zahnmedizin und oft die erste größere Restauration, die Patienten erleben. Eine Krone ist oft die beste Lösung, wenn ein Zahn stark geschwächt oder beschädigt ist.

00:01:34: Let’s start with a helpful basic: How to explain what a crown is. A crown is a protective cap that covers the entire visible part of a tooth. It is used when a tooth is too damaged or too weak for a filling, inlay, or onlay. Crowns restore strength, function, and appearance. Patient-friendly explanation: “A crown is like a little helmet for your tooth. It covers and protects it completely, so you can chew again without worrying.”

00:02:26: Next: when does your patient need a crown. There are several reasons for a crown: 1. A tooth has a very large cavity. 2. To seal the tooth after a root canal treatment. 3. A tooth is fractured or severely worn down. 4. To improve appearance for example shape, color, and alignment. 5. To support a dental bridge. Patient-friendly explanation: “Your tooth is too weak for a filling. A crown will give it the strength and protection it needs.”

00:03:29: Now, let us have a look at the different steps of the process of getting a crown: Step 1 – Examination and Diagnosis: X-rays are taken to check roots and surrounding bone. “We’ll take an X-ray to make sure the root is healthy before we place a crown.” Step 2 – Local Anesthesia: Tooth and surrounding tissue are numbed. “I’ll numb your tooth, so the procedure is completely comfortable.” Step 3 – Tooth Preparation: The tooth is shaped so the crown can fit securely. Decay or old fillings are removed. “I’ll gently shape your tooth so the crown can sit perfectly on top.” Step 4 – Impression or Digital Scan: A mold or scan of the tooth is taken and sent to a dental lab or processed with CAD/CAM. “We’ll take a scan of your tooth so the lab can make a crown that fits exactly.”

00:05:39: Step 5 – Temporary Crown: A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth until the final crown is ready. “I’ll place a temporary crown today. It protects your tooth until your permanent crown is ready.” Step 6 – Lab Work: The crown is made from ceramic, metal, porcelain-fused-to-metal, or zirconia. Step 7 – Crown Placement on the Second Appointment: The temporary crown is removed. The final crown is tried in, adjusted, and cemented. “Today we’ll fit your permanent crown. I’ll check the bite and cement it, so it feels natural.” Step 8 – Bite Check and Polishing: Dentist ensures proper occlusion. “Please bite down gently. Perfect — now I’ll polish the crown, so it feels smooth.”
