Today we’ll talk about consulting and informing the patient on the steps of a surgical root canal procedure. So, let’s start! Surgical root canal treatment, also known as apicoectomy or endodontic surgery, is a procedure used to save a tooth when a non-surgical root canal treatment has not been successful or when complications prevent a non-surgical approach. Die chirurgische Wurzelbehandlung, auch bekannt als Wurzelspitzenresektion oder endodontische Chirurgie, ist ein Verfahren zur Erhaltung eines Zahns. Sie wird angewendet, wenn eine nicht-chirurgische Wurzelbehandlung nicht erfolgreich war oder Komplikationen eine nicht-chirurgische Vorgehensweise verhindern.

You can start the consultation by saying: A surgical root canal treatment is a minor surgical procedure that we perform when a conventional root canal treatment is not enough to fully heal the tooth. I’ll explain each step so you know exactly what’s happening and can feel confident and comfortable during your treatment.

00:02:36: Step 1 – Numbing the Area: We start by administering a local anesthetic to numb the area completely. You may feel a small pinch during the injection, but after that, you should feel no pain during the procedure. Step 2 – Gaining Surgical Access: Once the area is numb, we make a small incision in the gum tissue near the affected tooth. This allows us to gently lift the gum and expose the bone and the root tip of the tooth. Step 3 – Removing the Infected Tissue: We carefully remove any inflamed or infected tissue surrounding the root tip. This helps eliminate the source of ongoing infection and inflammation. Step 4 – Removing the Root Tip: The very end of the root (called the apex) is removed. This part often contains lingering infection or is not accessible through a standard root canal treatment. Step 5 – Sealing the Root End: Once the root tip is removed, we clean and prepare the end of the root and seal it with a small filling to prevent bacteria from re-entering. This is known as a retrograde filling. Step 6 – Closing the Incision: After the area is cleaned and sealed, we place a few small stitches to close the gum tissue. These help the area heal properly. The stitches may dissolve on their own or be removed at a follow-up appointment. Step 7 – Recovery and Aftercare: You might experience some swelling or mild discomfort for a few days, which is normal. We’ll provide instructions on how to care for the area and may prescribe medication if needed. Healing usually progresses quickly, and we’ll schedule a follow-up to ensure everything is healing as it should. Last, but not least, you can say: Although this is a surgical procedure, it's minimally invasive and typically well tolerated. Our goal is to eliminate the infection, preserve your natural tooth, and help you return to comfort. If you have any questions at any point, we're here to guide and support you.
