#85 Die endodontische Behandlung – Endodontic Treatment

00:00:33: In this lesson we will talk about basics in root canal treatment. So, let’s start! When a tooth is damaged through decay, injury, or a crack in the tooth, thus causing an inflammation, endodontic treatment is necessary. Many teeth are saved each year with a root canal treatment. Wenn ein Zahn durch Karies, eine Verletzung oder einen Riss beschädigt ist und sich dadurch entzündet, ist eine endodontische Behandlung erforderlich. Viele Zähne werden jedes Jahr durch eine Wurzelbehandlung gerettet. By the way, did you know that “Endo” is the Greek word for “inside” and “odont” means “tooth”? Endodontic treatment treats the inside of the tooth. To ensure your patient understands an endodontic treatment, it helps to inform them about the anatomy of the tooth.

00:01:57: Explaining the Root Canal to Your Patient: Underneath the white enamel and a hard layer called dentin, there is a soft tissue called the pulp on the inside of your tooth. The pulp contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. It also creates the surrounding hard tissues of the tooth during development. The pulp extends from the crown of your tooth to the tip of the roots where it connects to the tissues surrounding the root. Each tooth has a canal system which goes from the crown to the root. A tooth may have up to four canals containing dental pulp. The pulp is important during a tooth’s growth and development. The most common endodontic procedure is known as a pulpectomy, where the dental pulp is removed to prevent further infection.

00:04:03: When Does Your Patient Need a Root Canal Treatment: If you have a badly infected or damaged tooth, root canal treatment can save your tooth. Otherwise, your tooth may have to be extracted. Your tooth may have become infected or damaged due to one of the following things: dental decay, wear and tear, gum disease, a crack in your tooth, an injury, cracked fillings or repeated dental treatments that have injured the dental pulp. When your tooth is damaged, bacteria can get inside the tooth and multiply. This may lead to an infection or an abscess in your tooth root. Using antibiotics alone may not work to cure root canal infections. If possible, it is always best to save your tooth. After all your tooth works better than an artificial tooth for biting and chewing.
